When Jeremy Clarkson was banished from Top Gear, we were devastated. Who else could we watch race a bullet train or attempt to kill a Toyota Hylux? While he had no say in fashion, if he says a car’s great, we’d gladly take his word for it. To that end, he’s declared the Lamborghini Huracán Performante his Car of the Year. And we’re agreeing wholeheartedly.
The Lamborghini Huracán Performante
As with most Lamborghinis, it is defiantly unsubtle, but it is so much more than a macho engine and loud wardrobe. The Huracán Performante, lighter and more aggressive than the standard Huracán, is a timely reminder that when it comes to supercars, few can do better.
You get into it and you don’t know what it is that’s tingling at the back of your head, but you think ‘this thing’s good’. There’s something about it. It’s not the speed, and it’s not the looks.
Packed with a 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 engine, the car’s loaded with 640 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque. That’s enough to get it off to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds flat. On a good day, it wouldn’t hurt to speed things up to 325 km/h; it’s currently the third fastest on the Nürburgring.
But if you do get ahead of yourself, the Performante is tuned to counter airflow and adapt to the road and driver’s habits. You can count on its active aerodynamics system, which delivers downforces as and when to keep the car grounded. This ensures you maintain full control, especially when you’re taking on sharp corners or slaloming down a mountain.
It also helps that steering is enjoyable and the seating position is almost perfect. They are both covered in Alcantara, which grips better than leather. Other useful features include light wheel rims and a liberal use of forged composite (a sturdy mix of carbon fibre and resin). Mention must also be made of the all-important sticky Corsa tyres from Pirelli and dual-shift transmission, which switches gears faster than a manual or automatic.
They call it an entry-level Lamborghini, but Clarkson had the uncanny instinct that it’s wickedly fast, nimble yet forgiving. It’s an addictive ride that makes a great fit for both the track and everyday commute, and we’re strapping ourselves up for the ride.
