IS THERE SUCH A THING AS A “TERRIBLE” VACATION? The very act of vacationing means vanishing, however temporarily, from the mechanical routine of life. That morning commute, that glacial queue for mediocre coffee, that enforced cheer in the office with the sub-par senior management. Can you think of better things to escape from? I’ll wait.

The true measure of a vacation though, is the distance it puts between you and the maddening crowd. Solitude can be delicious, and privacy its seductive gift-wrap. The most intimate moments of a getaway are sprung from the loins of blissful rest. But what happens when your multi-generational family — ankle-biters and cheerful, chatty grandparents in tow — want in on the beach holiday?

One For The Whole Family

That’s where something like the Conrad Bali slides in like a clever DM.

The institutional hospitality brand piles it on for a new trick. When was the last time you brought the kids and the parents away for a chipper vacay? Chances are, those options are few and far between. With the exception of a one-price-fits-all meals and drinks ticket, or a bland and vapid cruise to nowhere, a multi-generational getaway is not usually the most exciting thing to plan.

The Conrad Bali is redressing for modern times. There is a fascinating child-free zone — the Conrad Bali Suites — that also functions like a honeymooner’s dream come true. An adults-only pool, where nerf-guns, unicorn floats and beach balls are unseen and very much unheard.

No high-pitched screams and squeals by the pool as you’re trying to read. No toddlers wailing and trying to deplete their demonic energies as you bake in the sun. No crying as they refuse food force-fed by exasperated parents who haven’t slept a wink since checking into their rooms. Just peace in a lush garden. All of it.

Cheerful And Charming F&B Options

We booked a lunch table at Eight Degrees South Restaurant, which is sat so close by the beach you can spot little blue crabs diving into tiny sand dunes. The main pool with its meandering waterways around the poolside suites was a lively, raucous touch.

The burrata with heirloom tomatoes was chilled and amazing, especially when topped off by a dirty burger with chunky fries and extra strips of bacon. And, as expected with most top-notch Balinese resorts, the service was warm as a fresh vegetarian pizza (also a winner), efficient and cheerful.

Here’s the plan: Check the grandparents with their kicking, punching, exasperating bundles of joy into the poolside rooms. Then settle into a Conrad Suite with your romantic partner some 100m away in the “adults” area.

The best thing about having a child-free suites zone within the estate of a large luxury resort? You can fall asleep anywhere. Don’t miss — the romantic Teppanyaki dinner for two at RIN Japanese Restaurant. The cooking of fresh seafood and meats over the steel hotplate is less of a meal prep than a performance of knife and skillet craft, thoroughly enjoyable and most importantly, delectable.
